Rewarding the gas pedal and the brakes.

2026-04-20

I believe a good engineering culture rewards questions as much as answers.

I will be the first to say that I definitely lean hard towards the gas pedal, but I also recognize the value of the brakes.

Recently, Tanium has been going through a period of rapid growth and change. During a time where upper management are contacting specific engineers to work on specific features, it is addicting to spike a feature with a fun video and ship it to GA.

I work with engineers who spike features within a day. I work with engineers who question assumptions and think through every possible tradeoff before commiting to a solution.

I generally prefer spiking something and iterating on it, but I think there is value in the engineer who takes the time to thoroughly consider all options.

Without a doubt, the absolute worst scenario is no direction, with lots of opinions. This is a nightmare situation.

Direction No Direction
Lots of Opinions Highly visible project with lots of buy in 5 iterations that all get rejected by different people
No Opinions Easily executable projects with fast turn around Full freedom and trust to own an initial spike from start to final iteration
